How to Calculate Paver Base and Bedding Sand

A paver project usually needs more than the pavers themselves. Base aggregate and bedding material are separate quantities, and their required depths depend on the project, soil, drainage, load, climate, and installation system. The calculation method is straightforward once the specified layer depths are known.

1. Calculate the project area

For a rectangular area, multiply length by width:

Area = length × width

For example, a 12 ft × 20 ft patio has 240 square feet.

2. Use the specified base depth

Use the base depth recommended for your site and installation method rather than assuming one universal thickness. Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12.

If a project calls for a 6 inch base, the calculation depth is 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft.

3. Calculate base volume

Multiply the area by the layer depth:

Base volume = area × depth in feet

For 240 sq ft at 6 inches:

240 × 0.5 = 120 cubic feet

Convert to cubic yards by dividing by 27:

120 ÷ 27 = 4.44 cubic yards

4. Calculate bedding sand separately

Bedding material should be calculated as its own layer. If the installation specification calls for 1 inch of bedding sand, convert 1 inch to 1 ÷ 12 = 0.0833 ft.

For the same 240 sq ft area:

240 × 0.0833 ≈ 20 cubic feet

That is about 0.74 cubic yards before any planning allowance.

5. Allow for ordering and material conditions

Measured volume is a planning quantity, not necessarily the exact delivered quantity. Compaction, grading, irregular edges, excavation tolerances, moisture, and supplier packaging can affect what you need. Keep allowances separate for each material rather than applying one percentage blindly to the entire project.

Do not confuse pavers, base, and bedding material

The paver calculator estimates the number of paver units. Base aggregate and bedding material are volume calculations. They also serve different purposes in the installation, so one material cannot simply be substituted for another because the calculated volumes look similar.

Irregular projects

For a curved or irregular patio, walkway, or other area, divide the project into measurable sections. Calculate each section using its actual area and specified layer depth, then add the volumes. If different areas use different base depths, keep those calculations separate.

FAQ

How do I calculate paver base volume?

Multiply project area by the specified base depth after converting the depth to feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

How do I calculate bedding sand?

Use the same area-and-depth method, but use the bedding layer depth specified for the installation.

Is 6 inches always the right paver base depth?

No. Required depth depends on site conditions, drainage, climate, soil, expected loads, and the installation system. Follow the applicable project specification or professional recommendation.

Should base and sand use the same waste allowance?

Not necessarily. Material handling, compaction, grading, and supplier packaging can affect each layer differently.

Does the paver calculator include base material?

No. The Paver Calculator estimates paver units. Base and bedding materials should be estimated separately.

Planning estimates, not purchase orders

Estimates are for planning purposes only. Actual material requirements may vary based on site conditions, material specifications, installation methods, waste, and local requirements. Always verify quantities with your supplier or qualified professional before purchasing materials.
